Mike Epps generates extraordinary buzz among his peers as not only one of the funniest comic actors in the industry, but also as a performer with impressive and growing dramatic range. Epps stars in and executive produces the hit Netflix comedy The Upshaws, set in his hometown of Indiana and centered on a working-class family. The series has earned ten NAACP Image Award nominations, with Epps winning “Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series” in 2024. It has also received two People’s Choice Award nominations. In addition, his fifth Netflix comedy special, Delusional, debuted to strong viewership, reaching nearly 4 million views in its first week.

He also appeared in Amazon Prime’s I’m a Virgo, which premiered at SXSW and earned nominations for both an Independent Spirit Award and a Gotham Award. In early 2024, his seventh stand-up special, Ready to Sell Out, premiered on Netflix, with The New York Times calling him “unquestionably a star.” Epps can currently be seen in the Amazon MGM comedy The Underdoggs, alongside Snoop Dogg, George Lopez, and Tika Sumpter, which debuted globally in over 240 countries and territories. Additional recent credits include HBO Max’s Winning Time, the Netflix special Snoop Dogg’s Fcn Around*, the Marvel film Madame Web, and The Come Up, directed by Sanaa Lathan for Paramount+.

Epps also starred in the HGTV special Buying Back the Block, which followed him and his wife, Kyra, as they purchased and restored homes on his childhood street in Indianapolis—one of which belonged to his grandmother—with the goal of revitalizing the community.

In recent years, he has appeared in Troop Zero alongside Viola Davis, Allison Janney, and Jim Gaffigan, and in A24’s critically acclaimed The Last Black Man in San Francisco, both of which premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. That same year, his stand-up special Just One Mike premiered on Netflix, and he starred opposite Eddie Murphy in Dolemite Is My Name, which received nominations from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and NAACP Image Awards.

In 2017, HarperCollins published his memoir Unsuccessful Thug, which chronicles his upbringing and how comedy transformed his life. Epps delivered a standout performance in HBO’s Emmy-winning biopic Bessie, starring Queen Latifah, portraying Richard Morgan. The film won a Critics Choice Award and a Primetime Emmy. He also appeared in three seasons of the Starz series Survivor’s Remorse, produced by LeBron James, earning a 2016 NAACP Image Award for his role as ‘Uncle Julius.’ He previously won a 2011 NAACP Image Award for Jumping the Broom and earned critical praise for Sparkle (2012), opposite Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks. His dramatic work continued with Repentance, alongside Forest Whitaker and Anthony Mackie, and Nina, where he portrayed Richard Pryor.

Epps remains a powerhouse in stand-up comedy, currently on a national tour and having performed in over 40 cities across three continents. He first gained national recognition in 1995 on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, which he later went on to host. A performance at The Comedy Store led to his breakout film roles with Ice Cube in Next Friday, Friday After Next, and All About the Benjamins. His extensive film credits also include The Hangover franchise, Girls Trip, Hancock, Lottery Ticket, Next Day Air, Roll Bounce, The Fighting Temptations, the Resident Evil franchise, How High, Dr. Dolittle 2, Talk to Me, and Guess Who?
